How to Join Indian Defence Forces
Serving in the Indian Defence Forces is one of the most honorable and prestigious careers. Whether you aim to join the Army, Navy, or Air Force, there are several entry routes depending on your qualifications and age group.
1. After 10+2 (Class 12)
- NDA (National Defence Academy): Conducted by UPSC, this is the most popular entry for young aspirants to join Army, Navy, or Air Force.
- 10+2 Technical Entry Scheme (TES): For candidates with PCM in 12th (mainly for Army and Navy technical branches).
2. After Graduation
- CDS (Combined Defence Services): Conducted by UPSC. You can join IMA (Army), OTA (Short Service), AFA (Air Force), and INA (Navy).
- AFCAT (Air Force Common Admission Test): For joining Indian Air Force in Flying, Technical, or Ground Duty branches.
- University Entry Scheme (UES): For engineering students in pre-final/final year.
- NCC Special Entry: For NCC ‘C’ Certificate holders (Army, Air Force).
3. For Women Candidates
- CDS (OTA): Women can apply for Officers’ Training Academy (Short Service Commission).
- AFCAT: Both Flying and Non-Flying roles available for women.
- NCC Special Entry (Air Force): For NCC women cadets.
4. Through Technical Entries
- SSC Tech (Army): For engineering graduates.
- Indian Navy B.Tech Entry Scheme
- Air Force through EKT (Engineering Knowledge Test) via AFCAT
5. Physical & Medical Standards
- All entries require physical fitness, good eyesight, and mental health.
- SSB (Services Selection Board) interview and medical examination are mandatory in officer entries.
